Dear Colleagues and Friends

efas

The aim of EFAS is to bring audiology to and from all European countries, enabling interchange in the fields of education, training, hearing assessment, screening and research.  This benefits our child and adult patients with hearing disorders and also encourages research collaboration.  EFAS is intended as a forum where Audiologists, ENT professionals and Hearing Instrument Professionals, as well as researchers, can move forward together.

The EFAS General Assembly 2018 was held on 27th/28th September at the Hospital Institut Saint Pierre in Palavas-Les-Flot, on the stunning Mediterranean coast of Southern France.  There, we were welcomed by the Board of the regional Cochlear Implant Center, and the Audiology Department.

Thirty two EFAS representatives from thirteen European countries attended an excellent workshop on new media applications and research relevant to clinical practice.  Advances in research were presented by Professors Uziel and Puel from Montpellier, the historic local University.  A review of tele-audiology and applications in France was given by Professor Venail, also from Montpellier ; Mr Jose Zirah, a local Cochlear Implant user and businessman with a technology application for the hearing impaired called ‘Twavox’, also explained his vision.

The General Assembly followed. The EFAS Chairperson and General Secretary gave reports on EFAS activities and new EFAS representatives were warmly welcomed.   Working Groups reported on School Hearing Screening, Audiology and Intellectual Disabilities, and Auditory Processing Disorder Working Group protocols/ developments.

Thanks were expressed to Professor Martin Kompis, Treasurer and 2017 Congress President, for organizing a great conference in Interlaken, Switzerland last year, where many fields of Audiology were analysed (www.efas2017.org).

The scientific program of the 14th EFAS Congress which will take place in Lisbon, Portugal on 22-25th May 2019 was updated by Professor Jorge Humberto Martins, the 2019 Congress President (see www,EFAS2019.com).  We will have a golden opportunity to discover a colourful city of many cultures, with a historic port and lovely beaches.

Professor Robert Trotic updated us at the GA about the 15th EFAS Congress in Sibenik, Croatia in 2021, promising new members and more glorious coastlines.

On behalf of the board of EFAS, I would like to emphasize our collaboration with all countries and all the professional societies of individual countries, to support development of the audiology profession across Europe with audiological conferences, workshops, scholarships and project grants.

We look forward to welcoming you to the 14th EFAS congress in Lisbon.

Best regards
Françoise Sterkers-Artières
